The mismatched cousins reunite for a trip to Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the tension between the odd couple resurfaces against the backdrop of their family history. When Benji and David visit their grandmother’s house in Poland, the location is where Jesse Eisenberg;s real-life ancestors settled in the diaspora.. I’ve always enjoyed watching Jesse Eisenberg perform
12 Etudes, Op. 25, No. 3 in F major Written by Frederic Chopin Performed by Tzvi Erez. He usually brings a nervous nervousness and smart, fast-paced dialogue to his roles. Now he’s won the Waldo Salt Screenplay Award at the Sundance Film Festival for his newly released film A REAL PAIN. Eisenberg produced, wrote and directed this "dramedy" an exploration of the relationship between estranged cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin).
The script is perfectly balanced with emotional beats and comedy
David is a high-profile billboard creator with a wife and child. Benji is a sensitive, very emotionally aware man who is grieving the loss of his grandmother, who he was very close to. They embark on a trip to Poland with a Jewish history tour group, which obviously brings up a range of difficult feelings. It’s a beautiful film with fully developed characters who really develop as they go along. It’s clear that they’re both going through something, as everyone is. This is actually the second film Eisenberg has written and directed, the first being WHEN YOU’RE FINISHED SAVING THE WORLD, which is now on my must-see list.
I hope awards season will be about REAL PAIN!
I knew Kieran Culkin was amazing when I saw SUCCESSION, and he’s even better. That being said, I can’t help but notice Eisenberg’s performance. In some ways, it’s harder to play an underrated role, which he does brilliantly. The film is about generational trauma, pain, and the human condition.
