Surely they were just developing the characters and setting a unique tone
Spies, London, Keira, Ben, quality cinematography, beautiful soundtrack – what could go wrong? And I already know that this is my favorite genre and will ignore any flaws that come my way. But when the dialogue in Episode 1 slowed down, a few moments dragged on, and scenes with attempted Quinten-esque dialogue leveled me off, I tried to console myself.
I was wrong
As the episodes dragged on, I realized that this series wasn’t going to deliver. Not just discord, but with characters I actually cared about. I honestly don’t know how the magic happens, but I was drawn deeply into the stories and characters of Slow Horses, The Americans, Le Bureau, the Diplomat, and The Old Man – despite all their flaws – and I was drawn in deeply by the stories and characters.
I’m so sad about what could have been
Add to that the lack of background information and the many omissions, and the annoying:curious ratio was too high to be entertaining. Yes, all the basic spy elements are here in Black Doves, but somehow the recipe lacked salt and by E03 I was already upping the ante. "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
