Divine G, imprisoned in Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theater group with other incarcerated men in this story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, as the actors attempt to. These are the actual audition tapes used to stage the film. Appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers: Anna Faris / Colman Sunday / Joseph Medeles (2024).
Composed by Bryce Dessner
When everything in life is taken away, it must be nearly impossible to find something to give you a reason to go on. So it’s for incarcerated individuals facing an uncertain future of indefinite duration. And even in such dire circumstances, realistically, one can’t help but wonder if rehabilitation is really a viable option.
But for some, there is hope through a seemingly unlikely source—art—as told in this true-to-life drama about the participants in the prison theater program at New York City’s Sing Sing maximum-security prison
Featuring a cast that includes both professional actors and current and former members of this talented group of inmates, viewers witness the ups and downs of these men as they strive to bring meaning—and hope—to their time behind bars. Director Greg Kwedar’s second film offers an intimate look into the lives of these aspiring actors, both their stage careers and their daily lives in circumstances that most of us can’t even begin to imagine. While the film’s narrative is admittedly a bit thin and convoluted at times, it’s more than made up for by the film’s stellar performances, led by Colman Domingo, Clarence Maclin, Paul Raci, and Sean.
In doing so, this offering also takes the audience on an emotional rollercoaster ride, from uplifting joys to heartfelt disappointments, revealing the immense strength of the character that guides these individuals
San Jose, who, like virtually everyone else in this fine ensemble, brings unparalleled depth to its characters and relationships, is easily among the best works in these areas that I have seen in a long time. This is especially touching when you know that many of the people in this production can relate to their circumstances based on personal experience, adding an unabashed authenticity to this release that is rarely seen on the big screen. For its efforts, "Sing Sing" has a good chance of being one of the 2024 season’s award nominees, especially in the acting categories, and showing us what is possible when we let our passions surface for their own sake, especially when we have nothing to lose.
In doing so, it serves as a true source of inspiration from where we least expect it
