A farming family from Montana is faced with other people encroaching on their land. Forry J. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) seems to often “forget” his Montana accent and revert to the Southern California voice he usually uses.

Kevin Costner is a patriarch who heads a dynastic ranch the size of some countries. His way of life is being violated by resort developers, tribal rights, and Montana state authorities. Reminiscent of Rock Hudson from Giant, he tries to cling to old habits.
Costner seems to be a natural fit for his character
“Yellowstone” develops quickly, without any preamble, but its story unfolds at the natural pace of a day in the wilderness, with pauses dedicated to tribal rituals, cowboy conventions and political machinations. This is a far-reaching task that touches on the connections between law and justice, family and friendship. He is a man tired of life, who has seen too much and lied too often.
Land and family are his life force
He hears footsteps approaching him, but he can fulfill his role only out of habit and devotion. Although some of the actions are a little confusing due to the lack of explanation, they feel natural, as if the viewer is getting a real slice of life in another world. I hope that the denouement of this saga includes an emotional payoff that justifies its breadth and attention to detail.

Update from 07/20/18: After four episodes, this series has a strong voice and a steady pace. We know the fullness of each story, from roots to fruits.
